Archive Entry #62: January 17, 2002

Posted on February 6, 2015.

In the early 1990's a book called “The Once and Future Church” warned mainline churches that profound change was happening in the culture they were trying to serve, and that unless they adapted, they would face dire consequences. At the time I found the book’s thesis improbable; by the end of the decade, I knew it was dead-on.

Today’s entry comes from the opening years of my efforts to create a different culture in our congregation regarding our purpose and operations. The idea that we have a mission – we don’t get together just for the fun of it – at the time was a revolutionary, though thoroughly biblical notion. How well today’s entry made the case then...or today...is up to the reader.

COMING NEXT: The first of three consecutive year-debuting entries. From November 1999 comes the kind of current events column I’ve been prone to write through the years, this one on genetic engineering to create “beautiful people.” Find it HERE.
