Archive Entry #60: October 24, 1991

Posted on January 30, 2015.

In our time issues of sexual orientation are common and growing in societal consensus; that wasn’t true in 1991. The nomination of Michael Kinnamon to be our denomination’s general minister and president raised thorny, painful divisions. The nomination failed, and so did our Church.

I include this column in the archive because it showcases my long-standing inclination not to engage controversial issues, at least not to take stands on them. Were we facing this conflict today, there’s no doubt my rhetoric (and ferocity) would be much different.

COMING NEXT: Following today’s milquetoast column on a divisive issue, the Archive pays a return visit to an issue on which I have never had any trouble expressing myself: the death penalty. Find it HERE.
