Archive Entry #40: November 16, 2000
As I read this column in advance of writing this introduction, I got teary eyed – in part because of the reference to my nephews who have been shining stars in my personal universe for decades, and in part because of the column’s poignancy.
Unless you’ve been connected to our congregation for 13-15 years or more, you probably won’t know the back story to which today’s entry rather mysteriously refers, and I’m not about to revisit it here. But that’s okay! Substitute the back story of your life; the result will be the same.
I don’t know that I have ever written a more candid (though also, I admit, mysterious) column. The year 2000 was painful for me personally and professionally. What you are about to read, even without its back story, will testify to a pained life.
I have no doubt but that you will understand.
COMING NEXT: From November 2004, a column about “God things” as Thanksgiving fuel. If you don’t know the vocabulary of God things, check out the next archive entry.... And check it out even if you do know about God things! Find it HERE.
