Archive Entry #20: March 25, 1987
I have always been a fan of television evangelists, but not always for the same reaons.
In my childhood and teen years I watched Billy Graham crusades because I respected Graham’s passion and enjoyed his sermons. Once I achieved adulthood, however, my attitude toward media preachers changed, in part because of the profession’s darker side reported in today’s archive entry.
In the intervening 27+ years since this column debuted, the names and faces of the responsible have changed (or at least aged), but the dynamic observed among them has not. Consequently, were I writing about this subject today, I would use updated examples (Mark Driscoll from Mars Hill Church in Washington state comes to mind) and an improved writing style, but the column would end with the same sentence.
COMING NEXT: From September 1995, a column that produced a call from an alarmed local newspaper editor. One of my favorite “And from Bill” stories ever! Find it HERE.
